FAF 1 ...into 2
Fucking Awesome Fest (Magic Stick/Majestic Cafe) (photos - mike milo - day-jobs limited set coverage : /)
A curly mained guitarist crab-walked his ass across the floor - another shaggy shouter tore up his robe and tied himself to everyone he could whilst also enveloping them into a make-shift catepillar-poncho device - a drummer handed me a cd, pointing to the glue-splattered back-end and proclaiming/warning - 'there's some of our hair in there' - I almost shook hands with a videographer/recorder with green paint all over one hand, blue all over the other -
I woke up tired... 3 more days to go

Legendary Creatures - The Burgundy Demos
With an old-world, candle-lit vibe, Legendary Creatures stride from pastoral, jangly folk-pop to a an effervescent alt-country tract that emphasizes harmony and rhythm, with the honeyed hum of a Roland organ square dancing with the quaint, tinny ripple of a mandolin.

"I Guess I’m Not Good Enough" is sparse and springy, with wispy vocals that sound as though they could just as easily be whispering beside you as they could be circling undetectably out and around the windblown treetops. "Elf In The Woods" has a lullabyish sway with the bass’s wavy trot and stomp facilitating duel-duets of acoustic guitar and mandolin and boy-girl harmonies that meld in such a idyllic swoon at choruses that feel like the bracing cool breeze of on-setting autumn. The nocturnal wandering moan of that shuffling guitar at "It’s Got Soul’s" opening gets eased and warmed by the playful plodding Roland and even more beautified by the achingly enchanting soar of the harmonies…the harmonies – again and again – it keeps coming back to that, I keep repeating it…in vocal and instrumental delivery, it’s the Legendary Creatures strong suit.

Ratatat atat Royal Oak Music Theatre - 9/9
The last time Evan Mast & Mike Stroud brought their pedal platters and six stringed swords round these parts, it was a crammed show up at the Crofoot in Pontiac that seemed to cull a healthy balance of both indie/art-rock and hip/hop fans... As was the beat-heavy flavor of the record they were then-touring on, in early 09 (LP3)... So we'll see what happens when they bring out their funkier, "weirder" beat-box and sample heavy fare from this year's follow-up, LP4
We're the first stop, at least on the U.S. side of the border, for their autumn 2010 tour.
Here's a visual sampling - "Drugs" (by Ratatat):
More info from XL or Ratatat

Robin Goodfellow - Susannah, You See Beyond
It's like I'm floating in space... my ankles catching on the gangly goop of stars like a celestial strands of lucid cosmic spider webs wafting in the sea of blackness; various objects hover past me: the whirring clang of some UFO's engine or the quicker screeching woosh of a shooting star...longish stretches of amorphous darkness are illuminated by these brief passings of stirring galactic traffic...
At least, if one closes ones eyes with one's head between headphones...while listening to the steady churning, truly-"atmospheric"-drift of Robin Goodfellow's 17-minute "The Hollow of the Tree Hills,"...well, then maybe you'll find yourself daydreamily tripping out onto similar fantastical exospheric landscapes.
Here's their blog. I'm not sure when their next show is - but they're on for this year's Zombie Dance Party - Oct 30 - Magic Stick.

Once you make it to the 8-minute mark, a muffled, punchy beat finally accelerates the piece, and while these lumbering rocket ship engines continue to sputter around the corners, a wavy synth coos in to warm things up as the beat continues to propel forward... either back to Earth or, if you like, out deeper, passing a handful more of alien suns and systems...
But that's my trip.
Nathan Burgundy (Computer Perfection) and A.P. MacKinnon (Mother Whale) unite in surreal sounds and meditative noise via Robin Goodfellow - which you can sample at said-project's bandcamp or over at their facebook.
Happy floating.
Happy floating.

A (Uh) Generation... Who needs dramamtic tension?

"...they say we're wastin such great po-ten-tial...oh-oh-oh..."
A few thoughts before Fucking Awesome Fest
"Historical sense and poetic sense should not, in the end, be contradictory, for if poetry is the little myth we make, history is the big myth we live, and in our living, constantly remake."
-Robert Penn Warren
~
A little while ago, I wrote a rambling recounting of the last night of July 2010, which was spent amongst a thousand or so drifting, musing bodies throughout the Crofoot entertainment comlex in Pontiac, MI.
Thereafter, at bar-sides and stage-fronts, a lot of people voiced to me the resonance it had with them. All of it was really heartening and encouraging; I was taken aback. The consensus came: that whatever was going on around here in Detroit--that each and all were quite glad to be apart of it, inspired-even!
One comment came: that that was the kind of language that started (or inspired) scenes.
That was the whole idea, right?

As Modern Civilization spilled across Europe towards the end of Medieval times, it became endemic that artists became sutured into the gutters, alleys and squatted lofts of major cities. A town (or network) of artists within a town...
Ever since Florence (or Venice) during The Renaissance - the natural urge seemed to be for artists to allign, inside these cities, out of both an assemblage of a somewhat collective identity and a richocheting/melting-pot of somewhat collective inspiration. Mozart's Vienna, to Paris Salons, and then French Symbolists, Impressionists; New Orleans jazz - Chicago jazz - Tin Pan Alley - Delta Blues - The Beats - Greenwich Village - the French New Wave - Haight Ashbury - British Invasion...The Factory...Factory Records...Manchester...LA Punk...DC Punk...Bronx Hip/Hop...(Disco?)...and, eh, "grunge..." ...then of course, Detroit's "garage" thing at the turn of this new century....and onto Portland, Austin, Athens and Baltimore... yadda yadda yadda
But recently I realized that I am growing tired of the hyperbole of history... the documentaries... the way every other three years we have another recounting of the Beatles coming to Ed Sullivan, regurgitated and re-spread across the public's TV screens dotted with new interviews of the same old aging faces... the same old recountings of CBGB's glory days, new angles, new perspectives...re-re-re-reflections...
...reflections of these 1 to 2 year periods of "happenings" or "explosions" or "scenes..." The electricity that flows through each participant thus making them feel as though they are striding wide with their heads in clouds and that all is full of love and we are grimacing with sharply cut coolness and mind-blowing, cutting edge weirdness...
The 1 to 2 year period where each "explosion" "happening" and "scene" celebrates their own unique weirdness to the max, like it's some extended lost weekend of a merry holiday's run through the streets, spreading our mind-altering carols.
And whereas Marco Polio's umbrella shredded, spilled out, veritable stage-tilting display may be yet another deluge of unique weirdness...they have still, yet, have been honing this weirdness for more than 2 years. Macrame Tiger turned heads with their stage-cluttered strutting and shambolic explosions - but even theirs is a band's story that stretches back a couple years.

Macrame Tiger turned heads with their stage-cluttered strutting and shambolic explosions - but even theirs is a band's story that stretches back a couple years.

Why should we be the next momentary musical mecca? No, that was never the idea. Let's forget, let's completely erase and destroy, all hang-ups on "scenes" "scensterism" "happenings" or anything like that...
Let's be a generation. Not Pete Townshend's generation spurred on by the chipped shoulder of oh-so-fleeting youth, or Richard Hell's "blank" generation of dissaffection and punk's new celebrated slovenly weirdness - just a generation...
Not something that the press or the blogs can simply tune-into at the time of our "hottest" activity and soon turn away after they feel they've sufficiently and assuredly documented our story beginning-to-end... let's continue thriving betwixt said-beginning and said-end...
Let's realize that, come hell, highwater or whatever-other-apocalypse chance chooses for us, that there is no end... at least not in a climactic sense.
Let's realize that, come hell, highwater or whatever-other-apocalypse chance chooses for us, that there is no end... at least not in a climactic sense.
We just like the tension of knowing that it could end... that the scene, the happening, the explosion...has a forthcoming end - that creates the preciousness and the morning after grin we smile when we recall the beer spilled glory of last night's show...
I'm reading a book right now that's really resonated with me, in terms of "stories." That is professor Claude S. Fischer's Made In America: A Social History of American Culture and Character.
(from page 6 of the University of Chicago Press' 2010 release), on our "...habit...to view the past as normal, natural and eternal, thereby making today seem abnormal, unnatural and unchangeable.....We weave stories, creating the past perhaps as much as remembering it.....We typically tell and understand history as a set of stories...("narratives")...rather than just one thing happening after another. Stories provide coherence, plot and dramatic tension."
So week-in, week-out... bands play show after show... journos or bloggers write about them, either blurb-ishly or extensively, in print and on computer screens, and attendees come and enjoy, discover or dispel the magic or the mess of whatever sort of unique weirdness we, the scattered masses of SE-MI, are putting out...
Week after week it just sounds not like a set of stories, but the continuation of one... a five, six, and seven year story...but still connecting back, however strongly, to Detroit "garage" or 80's punk or, however loosely, to late 60's psychedelia or mid-50's Beats... it's one long string...
Ever notice, also... how with each successive "scene," the stories, the lifespans of the happenings, were sped up.

How the Renaissance lasted a couple hundred years, how the Paris Salons hung around for dozens...and yet the Beatles, the greatest band of the modern era didn't even make it 9 years...to the point where punk bands in the early 1980's would be together for mere weeks and write not even 9 songs...
So maybe... our narrative... is not one ultra-exciting and profound "explosion"...and not one prolonged and epic "generation..." it's 12 or 19 different narratives all happening at once - beams of light shooting forth into the dark streets of this crumbled manufacturing mecca and intertwining every weekend via loud, impassioned music.
Maybe...
just "one thing happening after another..." ...the end of hyperbole. Who knows what I'll write about all this 9 years from now. Maybe I'll be on PBS in front of a blue screen, being interviewed about it for what will then-already-be the third or fourth recounting of this....

Either way - a bunch of bodies - either carrying or playing instruments or those standing and listening, are about to crowd up the Majestic complex this weekend. It won't necessarily define us or reach a climax, but it'll be another important splotch on the montage. (Does this montage have a frame? Do we just keep spilling forth?)
See you round the stages this weekend - at the scene of many intertwining and colliding narratives...

Listen: Blonde Readhead / Pantha Du Prince (then, See:)

Blonde Readhead pairs with Pantha Du Prince - for a show this autumn - Mon 10/18/10 Detroit Magic Stick
Should be a cozy little fall-feelin' affair - dark, fuzzy, clangy yet grooving -
Yes, it is still only just August... but, you can at least start whetting your aural appetites now, via these tunes.
The first comes from Blonde Redhead's forthcoming Penny Sparkle (4AD) - their first in three years - laying down tracks with the same producers who recently worked with Fever Ray,
Massive Attack and Bat for Lashes.
more info: 4AD
Pantha Du Prince (Hendrik Weber) is returning to the states, after having already played some shows here in support of the splendid and trippy Dark Noise (via Rough Trade).
Have a listen to this:

CAVE - 8/21 - Alvin's (with Jealousy / James Baljo)
This has been one of my favorite finds of 2010 -Chicago's CAVE roots in-and-riles-up the perfect balance between punk-ish splattered new-wave pop and fast funky krautrock.
I know the third week in August is already a slammed schedule for a lot of SE-MI's, be it for music, cars or the usual deluge of ne'er-do-well rigmarole... but give it a listen (here) and see what you think...
Since they can be a difficult band to "google," and thus wind up proving difficult to track down videos or MP3s for you quick blog clickers out there - how about, instead, just stare at this picture -
and have that aptly elucidate the visual accompaniment to the aural jitteriness of the opening 13 seconds of "Hot Bricks."
More info on their latest release, Pure Moods - from Drag City.

Where Was I? ... (Tame Impala)
I'm sure I logged on today to write about something...or at least a few things...plural!
But, this second cup o' coffee hasn't jogged any helpful synapses yet - thus, I'm left with that eerie, itchy, unsettling feeling, something like leaving Kevin home alone and not realizing it... ah well.
I will leave you with this nice little dark apocalyptic and yet charming video from one of my current favorite bands/albums - Tame Impala's Innerspace -song: "Solitude Is Bliss"

Zott Hot

Read the Real Detroit interview with Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr - as part of said pub's 'hot issue' - crowning them hot band. (...the original draft of which did not include the potentially edgier phrase 'dance their asses off') The duo consists of Josh Epstein (also of the Silent Years) and Daniel Zott (also of The Great Fiction ...and also another, newer band...)
The latter of those bands parenthetically referenced, The Victorious Secrets, successfully stepped to the top of the heap o' bands competing to be the new spokes-band for FreeCreditScore.com - Read the story from the Detroit Free Press. Here's the video. Here's their site.
Not that the old 1991 concept of 'hitting the big time' still holds today but - if the rest of the world finally decides to discover our local pop-writing hero, Mr. Zott, -at this point, -after 13 years of TGF... and - after that commercial... well, then, there's likely to be a few brows raised...
> A credit-website commercial jingle + > a band named (slightly altered) for a Nascar racer...
But it works. 1991 be damned.
That's all covered in the DEJJ interview - read more.
